I’m Gina Hansen, an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and the founder of Gina Hansen Psychotherapy. I’m passionate about supporting people to heal, grow, and build resilience through evidence-based psychotherapy.

My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed, creating a safe space where adults, teens, couples, and groups can explore challenges, strengthen coping strategies, and work toward lasting wellbeing.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, is a core part of modern psychology. It is a collaborative process that helps people explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Through this process, individuals gain insight into themselves, work through challenges, and develop healthier ways of coping.

A qualified therapist, such as a psychologist or Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, uses evidence-based psychological approaches to support clients. These approaches can help with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationship difficulties, and major life transitions.

Unlike quick fixes, psychotherapy and psychological therapy aim to create lasting change. By uncovering unhelpful patterns, building resilience, and fostering personal growth, clients can move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

At its heart, psychotherapy is a partnership. The therapist and client work together to set meaningful goals, build understanding, and enhance overall wellbeing. This collaborative approach lies at the foundation of effective psychology practice, empowering clients to achieve clarity, confidence, and strength in everyday life..

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. In EMDR therapy, the meaning of painful events is transformed on an emotional level. For instance, an assault victim shifts from feeling horror and self-disgust to holding the firm belief that, “I survived it and I am strong.”
    The physical symptoms or “disturbance” previously coupled with that memory are also eliminated with successful processing.

  • Relational-Integrative EMDR (RIEMDR) is an advanced EMDR framework that was created by Accredited Mental Health Social Workers Michele Bowes and Amy English. It incorporates principles from Attachment Informed EMDR (AI-EMDR), Resource Therapy (Advanced Parts Work), Somatic/Polyvagal, Imagery Rescripting, Neuroscience and Mindfulness. A mind, body and spiritual connection to create a comprehensive and wholistic approach to trauma and working with complexity.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavioral treatment. DBT emphasizes the balance between acceptance and change. It incorporates mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills to help individuals manage emotions, improve relationships, and reduce impulsiveness and self-destructive behaviors.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS identifies and addresses multiple sub-personalities or families within each person’s mental system. These sub-personalities consist of wounded parts and painful emotions such as anger and shame, and parts that try to control and protect the person from the pain of the wounded parts.
    The sub-personalities are often in conflict with each other and with one’s core Self, a concept that describes the confident, compassionate, whole person that is at the core of every individual. IFS focuses on healing the wounded parts and restoring mental balance and harmony by changing the dynamics that create discord among the sub-personalities and the Self. It is often used in conjunction with EMDR and RIEMDR.

  • Narrative therapy seeks to help you become aware of the stories you carry with you through life and how these stories can influence the way you view yourself. It can empower you to take back your narrative and see any problems as distinct from you.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combines cognitive therapy with behavior therapy by identifying maladaptive patterns of thinking, emotional responses, or behaviors and replacing them with more desirable or helpful patterns.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based therapeutic approach that emphasizes accepting thoughts and feelings while committing to values-driven actions to enhance psychological flexibility and well-being. Used in conjunction with other therapies it can help to identify and resolve inner conflicts.

  • If you have a current Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $87.45 per session, reducing your out-of-pocket cost to approximately $92.55

  • Check your health fund to see whether counselling or psychology is included in your plan.
